TORI CAPTIVATES VIRGIN MEGASTORE; RARE IN-STORE PERFORMANCE ATTRACTS HUNDREDS TO TIMES SQ.
Atlantic recording artist Tori Amos recently made a rare in-store appearance at the newly opened Virgin Megastore in New York City's famed Times Square. The event, which attracted a crowd of over 800 fans, coincided with Tori's three-night sold-out run at The Theater at Madison Square Garden (May 13-15). Amos's current "Dew Drop Inn" tour is her most extensive North American itinerary to date, with shows running through the summer. Her latest album, the RIAA gold "BOYS FOR PELE," debuted at #2 on the national album chart.
The Virgin performance, as reported in Newsweek's May 27th issue ("Diva on the Desktop") was broadcast live simultaneously over Z-100 (100.3 FM), via satellite to Virgin Megastores on the West Coast, and in Atlantic's DigitalArena (www.atlantic-records.com). Within the 24 hours surrounding the broadcast, the Atlantic Website received over 225,000 hits. Coverage of the event on the World Wide Web combined continuously updated digital photos by photojournalist Frank Micelotta with real-time RealAudio and live video, along with special updates and in-the-crowd reports from on-the-scene Atlantic correspondents.
Accompanied for a portion of the set by guitarist Steve Caton, Tori performed "Crucify," "Silent All These Years," "Cornflake Girl," and the "BOYS FOR PELE" track "Hey Jupiter." Afterwards, she met and signed autographs for 50 Z-100 contest winners.
Tori has made a number of other television appearances thus far in 1996, including Saturday Night Live (which was re-aired May 25th), The Tonight Show, Late Show with David Letterman, Late Night with Conan O'Brien, CBS This Morning, Live with Regis & Kathie Lee (twice), Entertainment Tonight, and MTV's 120 Minutes; she has also been featured on CNN and NBC-TV's Today, and Weekend Today. Other upcoming Tori television appearances include VH1's Crossroads on June 19th, MTV Unplugged on June 25th, a return to The Tonight Show on June 27th, and ABC-TV's Primetime Live in July.
She was recently featured in People magazine's "The 50 Most Beautiful People In The World 1996" issue. In addition, the compantion video for "Talula," the current single from "BOYS FOR PELE," is in rotation on MTV, VH1, and The Box.
